Summer
Lunch
Santa Cruz County ranks among the top 10 counties in California
for its high incidence of overweight children. The resulting health
risks, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart
disease, represent a major health challenge facing our county. It
is well-documented that children who are well-nourished and physically
active do better academically, and are ready to learn. Good nutrition
is crucial for physical growth and development as well as overall
school readiness.
The Summer Lunch Program is a key part of local community collaborative
efforts to support healthy kids and families and advocate for good
nutrition, physical exercise and access to healthy food for everyone.
It fills a gap for low-income children who otherwise would not have
access to free, healthy meals during the summer months when school
is not in session. Summer Lunch
sites also provide opportunities for daily physical activity as
well as nutrition education resources.
La Manzana Community Resources’ Summer Lunch Campaign will
be held from
6/13 – 8/12 at 23 different sites throughout Santa Cruz County.
More than 38,000 free meals are provided to nearly 1,000 children
each year.
